Windsurfing: Golf Course Car park, Ynyslas Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: 18-25 knots Surf / Sea State: 1-3 foot messy surf Air Temperature: 8ºC Sea Temperature: 9ºC Weather: Mainly Cloudy Max Speed: 25.4 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 27.5 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Its not often that I give a session 5 stars, but today was just
perfect...as good as it gets!!
I got there just as Larry was packing up. he looked pretty knackered and I
just couldn't persuade him to go back out for a while.
I could see another kite (presumably Shem) out in the lagoon on the other
side, but I decided to windsurf as it looked as though there was just
enough wind. My first run I was only just powered up, and I was half
expecting to come back in to get a kite, but on my next run I was well
powered up and thats the way it stayed, with the wind gradually increasing
through the afternoon. I had some pretty mad speed runs over the rough
waters, right on the edge of control and spending as much time just above
the water as on it...Just skipping from peice of chop to piece of chop.
There were some nice little ramps about as well which led to some pretty
big jumps.
After a while, the wind had picked up even more so I came in to put on some
more outhaul and was just about to head across to Aberdovey side to see the
others when the wind picked up even more and they packed up... So I worked
my way upeind towards Borth instead, followed by a few mad downwind runs in
amongst the surf. By now the waves had picked up as well and things were
getting a little rough. Loads more jumps, some more mad speed runs but best
of all were my gybes on the outside. I've never changed direction so
quickly!! Heading straight out, instead of starting to gybe just before the
wave so that I'd be on the wave on the way out of the gybe, I was leaving
it until I was on the wave and then just stamping on the rail and cranking
the board around at full tilt, sending up big plumes of spray and then
dropping straight down the face of the wave... Woohooo. A couple of times I
was doing the rig change in mid air as I threw myself back down the wave
face.
What a day!!! Haven't been windsurfing for a while and I'd forgotten how
much hard work it is... I should sleep well tonight.
